My friends always hate it when I multi-task in other tabs while chatting with them (they can tell because of my obviously delayed reactions...). But sometimes it's not my fault: if they send me a link to a YouTube video, I have to open another tab in order to watch it. To help with this, we've just added a new feature to Gmail chat: YouTube and Google Video previews. If you receive (or send) a link to a video in a chat message, you'll see a preview of the video right in your chat window.



Click the preview, and the video will play right there. Just remember to say something every once in a while or your friends will probably catch on that you're enjoying the dramatic chipmunk more than their conversation...

Snowboaring on Mt Charleston

This is my first recorded table jump and land - Notice the kickin' tie? - after this jump I did an indy and another table jump which was a lot smoother. Pretty good for a 31 yo Web Developer from Las Vegas in his second season of boarding....

This is up on Mt Charleston north of Las Vegas NV where we just got 30" this week from a record breaking snow storm that blanked the valley on Wednesday.

Puppy Needs a new pair of ... well teeth!

I've been trying to save money for my 11 yr old puppy to get her teeth cleaned and fixed and it just hasn't been working out. She is getting to the point of severe halitosis and really needs to get this done. They are going to put her under so they can really get it all cleaned up. The below chipIn widget is for half the procedure so as I see money coming in, i'llbe putting the matched amount away in the safe to make sure we can take care of her by the end of the year. Her birthday is December 11th so this is our belated present to her.

Google Chases Skype With New Gmail Video Chat and poises to blow them out of the water.

Video chat service Skype has some new competition — Google has just added audio and video chat to Gmail. The new chat tools essentially offer most of the features of Skype, or Apple's iChat, within the standard Gmail interface.

I installed this today and it is sweet. I've been told Google has bought and is integrating a video streaming company into thier product line and this is the public taste of that merger.

There's also an installation link at Gmail.com/videochat.

"We think this pretty significant," said Rajen Sheth, senior product manager for Google's enterprise group. "It's something that we see bringing people closer together, especially in a business context."

Sheth said that Google has been using Gmail video chat across its more than 60 offices around the globe. "It actually is something that can help people, especially, in tough times, to save money," he said. "It makes it so you can do face-to-face meetings without travel."

5.11 Tactical Series UC3.400 Flashlight Might Be the Last Torch You'll Ever Need

And it does it all without batteries of any kind. That is, if it ever comes to light (ugh). Slated for release in 2009, the 5.11's Light for Life UC3.400 LED flashlight uses the almost mystical power of an ultracapacitor to achieve a full 23.5-hour charge in 90 seconds. This torch is expensive at $170, but the makers promise you'll make that up and then some over the course of its 10-year lifetime.

The high-performance Light for Life UC3.400 produces 270 peak lumens in bright mode, 90 lumens in standard mode, and has a 270-lumen tactical strobe. The three LED bulbs on the flashlight are rated for 50,000 hours and never have to be replaced. At about 16 oz., the flashlight weighs approximately half as much as competitors' full-size duty flashlights. - Surefires start at only 65 lumens and you can get a 120 bulb that kills your batteries quick.

The UC3.400 specs state the flashlight is rated for 50,000 recharges, regardless of temperature or storage conditions. Flashlight News does the math, and that comes out to one charge a day for 135 years, which is perfect given the cold, dark days the coming Singularity will bring.

Moe importantly, these stats best typical rechargeable flashlights with ease; current rechargeable flashlights begin to degrade after the first use, are affected by extreme hot and cold, and will last for just 500 to 1,000 charges.

This thing is also nigh indestructable, claims the manufacterer:

Made of a firearm-grade high-strength polymer, the 11.5" UC3.400 casing is fully sealed against the elements. It's abrasion, crack and bend-resistant. The temperature-tolerant ultracapacitors are rated at -40° F to 149° F (-40° C to 65° C). Also, the water-resistant, ruggedly built UC3.400 flashlight features solid-state construction.

Obama launches Web site to reach public - Tech-heads take note!

You may not agree with all his views or even with the man himself, but as I am a tech-head myself I have to be excited about a tech-savy president.
The site looks promising, missing content for now, but has potential.

Let's see where he takes this.  I am half temped to apply for a position in his administration.... you know what, I will.  Then I'll tell you all about it.

The rate-setting arm of the U.S. Federal Reserve Board steps up to the plate today for the second time this month after making an emergency rate cut just three weeks ago.

Investors are betting the Fed will lower the federal funds rate by half of a percentage point to 1 per cent, matching the size of the cut it made earlier this month in a co-ordinated action with other central banks.

"It will signal they are concerned about [the credit crunch] spilling over into the real economy," said Mark Chandler, a fixed-income strategist with RBC Dominion Securities Inc. "They will go to 1 per cent and keep their fingers crossed."

The Fed had been expecting the unemployment rate would rise to a 5.3-per-cent to 5.8-per-cent range, but now the consensus is for 6.8-per-cent unemployment, and that is even probably too low, Mr. Chandler said. "That tells you how fast the real economy is deteriorating."

Nevertheless, some economists say a cut of a quarter of a percentage point is not out of the question, especially if the Fed indicates it is leaning toward a follow-up rate cut.

"I think there would be disappointment if they only followed through with a 25-basis-point cut at this stage," Mr. Chandler said. (A basis point is 1/100th of a percentage point.)

Credit conditions globally remain extremely tight and U.S. banks would be helped by a rate cut.

Even Canadian banks, which for the most part have avoided the global crisis, are still far from being back to normal despite the rate cuts and other central bank actions.

"All of that is helping the banks and it's greasing the financial wheels, but not much has moved down to the borrowers," said Edward Jong, senior vice-president and fixed-income portfolio manager for Mak Allen & Day Capital Partners Inc., an affiliate of frontierAlt Management Ltd., manager of the frontierAlt Opportunistic Bond Fund.

The yield on five-year Canadian bank bonds is 250 basis points higher than Canadian government bonds and subordinated bank debt is 327 points over government bonds, compared with a normal spread of 30 points at the start of 2007, Mr. Jong said.

"The banks are still disadvantaged. Whatever the central bank is trying to do to foster consumer lending is being negated," he said, referring to the high borrowing costs for the banks.

HOW WILL MARKETS REACT?

So far there are few signs that the actions being taken by the central banks to deal with the credit crisis are having much of an effect in the stock markets.

The VIX, which measures the implied volatility in the S&P 500 options, remains near a record high.

It is critical that confidence is restored to enable banks to make "loans to individuals, companies and each other for that matter," said Clancy Ethans, senior vice-president and chief investment officer for Richardson Partners Financial Ltd., and Andy MacLean, director of private client investing.

The core of the problem remains the U.S. housing crisis, they said in a report to clients. "The housing market must also be addressed through a massive legislative effort that would only be likely with a new administration in the United States," they said.

"We expect that the plan will eventually be successful in stabilizing the current crisis, free up lending through the financial system, and as these efforts take effect, we should see a measure of confidence return to the equity markets," they added.

New in Labs: Stop sending mail you later regret

Sometimes I send messages I shouldn't send. Like the time I told that girl I had a crush on her over text message. Or the time I sent that late night email to my ex-girlfriend that we should get back together. Gmail can't always prevent you from sending messages you might later regret, but today we're launching a new Labs feature I wrote called Mail Goggles which may help.

When you enable Mail Goggles, it will check that you're really sure you want to send that late night Friday email. And what better way to check than by making you solve a few simple math problems after you click send to verify you're in the right state of mind?


By default, Mail Goggles is only active late night on the weekend as that is the time you're most likely to need it. Once enabled, you can adjust when it's active in the General settings.


Hopefully Mail Goggles will prevent many of you out there from sending messages you wish you hadn't. Like that late night memo -- I mean mission statement -- to the entire firm.

Time to get wet ...

JetBlue, Yahoo, RIM plan free in-flight Wi-Fi

JetBlue, Yahoo, and Research In Motion plan to offer free in-flight Wi-Fi connections for laptop computers and advanced cell phones, RIM said Thursday.

The service is designed to enable passengers to access customized Yahoo e-mail and Yahoo instant-messaging services on their laptops, or to access corporate e-mail on Wi-Fi enabled versions of the popular BlackBerry device from RIM. According to a RIM representative, the first JetBlue flight offering the service will depart December 11.
